Agaseke baskets and Plateau have been part of Rwandan tradition for centuries. They are hand woven from raw natural materials like sisal fibres, sweetgrass and raffia. Culturally, they have been exchanged between families during wedding ceremonies, and used to store food in the household. Although they still serve these purposes, the beautifully handcrafted baskets have become increasingly popular as a form of interior decoration and table setting, being used as ornamental plates, table mats and fruit baskets. The traditional white, black and earth tone colors of the baskets and “plateau” have also been diversified, introducing brighter and livelier colors and a variety of designs.
